Low-waste tips for when you’re on the go
Always carry a reusable water bottle, even when you are you are eating in cafes or restaurants. You can refill the bottle in a coffee shop or from a filtered water machine. Find the map here.
Bring your reusable cup if you like take-away coffee. Sometimes a simple jam jar will do. Check out this list for where to buy reusable cups.
Say no to straws. Don’t forget to say “Joris kalamaki, parakalo” before you order a drink. If you do want to use a straw, bring your own. Find out where to buy reusable straws by clicking in the same link mentioned above.
Don’t hesitate to ask for ceramic cups and plates, metal cutlery, etc., when you see that a cafe or restaurant serves food on single-use plastic.
Bring your own take-away containers for leftovers if eating at a restaurant, or if you plan to get a take-away. A jar can work too.
Bring your own bag. You can always keep one in your handbag or backpack or in car
Avoid buying things that are packaged. For pastries, sandwiches, and biscuits, for example, keep a small produce bag or just some kitchen towel ready to wrap things in.
Keep your shopping stuff ready in your car. This can include a cardboard box, fabric bags, maybe a basket, as well as jars if you like to buy cheese, meat, capers, olives, etc. Smaller produce bags are great for rice and seed. For more information, check the low waste shopping tips here.
