How to make your own deodorant

Deodorant

Body odour can be avoided in the first place by washing and scrubbing under the arms. A lot depends on our diet and hormones too and for some people just rubbing some lemon under their arms is enough. If not, you can still avoid buying commercial deodorants, which contain harmful chemicals and come packaged in plastic, by buying natural products from Sapontina and Plastikourgeio, or, best of all, by making your own. Here’s a simple recipe:

  • 1 tbsp bicarbonate of soda

  • 4 tbsp corn flour /arrowroot powder (sometimes known as tapioca flour)

  • 2-3 tbsp coconut oil

  • Optional: essential oils (I’d suggest geranium, lavender, rosewood or lemon, but not sage or other more intense essential oils). You can buy essential oils from Amorgos. Click here.

Mix the bicarbonate of soda and cornflour together in a bowl. Add 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil (if the coconut oil is solid, immerse the jar in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes and the oil will melt). Stir to form a paste. If you’re using it, add a few drops of essential oil.

If you happen to be sensitive to bicarbonate, try it without. I’m also planning to make it with almond oil instead of coconut oil and research a recipe for a spray that uses medicinal plants such as sage.
